Free State of Jones (2016)

During the year 1863, a Mississippi farmer named Newt Knight takes on the role of a medic within the Confederate Army. Despite being a part of the army, Knight holds firm beliefs against slavery and prefers tending to the injured over engaging in battle against the Union forces. When tragedy strikes and his nephew perishes in combat, Newt decides to return to his homestead in Jones County to protect his loved ones. However, his honorable intentions lead to him being labeled as a renegade deserter, forcing him to flee for his safety. Seeking refuge in the marshlands, Newt crosses paths with a group of runaway slaves seeking freedom. Forming a bond with these individuals and other local farmers, Knight spearheads a daring uprising that would leave an indelible mark on the course of history.
